It can be difficult to communicate effectively through email, Slack channels, and virtual project management tools. In-person team meetings, chats over a cubicle wall, celebratory lunches and happy hours all offer opportunities for employees to communicate in real time, recognizing each other’s accomplishments, and seeking support as needed.

For extroverts, or those who rely on networking to succeed in their jobs, the pandemic has been a challenge to maneuver, requiring creativity to make new connections. Businesses live and die by revenue and growth goals. And those can only be achieved when their employees have their own set of goals to meet. In addition to company growth, goals have been shown to boost productivity and motivation, fostering positive employee wellbeing. According to an article by Gallup, “Employees who strongly agree that their managers helped them set performance goals are 69% more engaged compared to employees who did not have managers help them."

Searching for a job and going through the hiring process remotely is strange. It’s more strange, however, to start a job remotely. There is no first day lunch with the team. No tours of the new office or meeting new colleagues. There is no access to paper files and notes from a predecessor, or time to sit down in the office with a boss or teammate to learn. In a PWC survey, 78% of 669 CEO’s agreed that remote collaboration is here long-term. Therefore, if you plan or anticipate a job change in the foreseeable future, you will need to adapt to a new way of onboarding.
