Businesses live and die by revenue and growth goals. And those can only be achieved when their employees have their own set of goals to meet. In addition to company growth, goals have been shown to boost productivity and motivation, fostering positive employee wellbeing. According to an article by Gallup, “Employees who strongly agree that their managers helped them set performance goals are 69% more engaged compared to employees who did not have managers help them."
We live in a fluid and fast paced environment, so we need agile goal setting techniques. Establishing clear goals gives employees a sense of direction, but also gives them the ability to adjust at the checkpoints to make sure we are still on the right path.
At Truvelop, we look at three different types of goal setting models:
- Outcome Goals: The focus of these goals is a single event, like a promotion.
- Performance Goals: The focus of these goals is to meet a certain measurement of performance. For example, someone in sales may want to maintain a specific pitch to close ratio. This can be a goal that is ongoing, but is something that you can actively work towards each day.
- Process Goals: These goals focus on day-to-day components that will help you grow over time. For example, you may want to be a better leader in your group. To get there, your goal may be to listen to a leadership development podcast each day. This daily process is going to help you reach your greater goal of becoming a better leader for your group.
Just as companies revisit annual and long-term plans, employee goals should be reviewed and adjusted often to meet the changing needs of most business environments.
And don’t forget a timeline. If we don’t put a deadline on something, it will never be viewed as a priority. Putting a deadline on goals assigns accountability to take the right steps.
With Truvelop, checking-in is easier than ever with our instant feedback tool, Spark. Using Truvelop's Spark function, managers can track and support their employees' goals. This is a great way to host a two-way conversation about the employee's journey towards their goals and to memorialize any feedback shared.
As a manager evaluates employees, Truvelop will provide cues for how to engage with the employee based on his/her score. With every evaluation, the manager can offer additional feedback in the comments section and the employee can respond or post comments, fostering a dialogue to address areas for improvement and opportunities to re-evaluate goals.
