Earlier this week Customer Success Team Member Juliana Withers hosted Truvelop’s User Community Lunch and Learn on Building Motivation. Motivation can fluctuate, but according to Self-Determination Theory, there are three areas we can build up to increase an individual’s engagement in the workplace. Juliana took our Users on a deep dive into creative ways to develop competence, autonomy, and relatedness.

Competence

  • Everyone wants to feel good about what they do. As a manager, it is important to push an employee into a positive feedback loop, meaning that when an individual feels good about their ability to complete a task, they are more likely to have a successful attempt, and then they feel good about that successful attempt and carry that feeling into the next attempt. It is a positive cycle. To build that feeling of competence, managers should share encouragement and constructive feedback, pushing their employees to work towards improvement while being supported. A sense of direction with some positive reinforcement can increase an employee’s motivation and their enjoyment of their work.

Autonomy

  • Developing autonomy is all about building an employee’s sense of control. To do this, we can focus on the value of one’s work. Employees want to be challenged and given feedback so that they can grow and make adjustments to their performance where it is necessary. They want to know their work matters and is valued and appreciated. They want to feel like they are in control of their experience, and that starts with knowing that they have the power to influence their own development. Utilizing two-way communication is a great way to listen to your employees while also sharing support and guidance on their professional development journey.

Relatedness

  • When someone feels connected to their co-workers, they are going to be more excited about their work. It is essential for all to understand that they are aiming for the same goal and that they support each other along the journey. This sense of belongingness and value within the group can drive an individual to want to perform at their full potential, and also to enjoy the developmental process. Creating multiple avenues of communication can help to increase feelings of relatedness, especially in a remote work environment.
